Spring 2019 Edition
We maintain 3 cemeteries – Belden on 303, Nesbett on 57, & Nichols on 303. Please do not drive on the grass. Rules are posted at each cemetery. If you have any questions, please visit / or call Cemetery Sexton Tim Adams at 330-421-8868. Our new Cemetery Sexton will start this summer.
Please call our Road Department at 440-926-2354 if you have any questions about what can & can’t be done with ditches.
If you are interested in fill material (untreated wood chips that could include twigs, branches, bark, wood, clay, & rocks), please call our Road Department at 440-926-2354. If you bring a truck, we will load it with our equipment.
We received a $250 event sponsorship grant from NOPEC which will be used for the fire department pancake breakfasts.
We will apply for a $465 energized community grant from NOPEC. The funds will be used to continue the LED lighting conversion that began last year.
Thanks to Albert Weigel the fire department once again received a $2,500 grant from Bayer/Monsanto (third year).

The new 32 x 56 pavilion is available for use. It contains 10 picnic tables.

Pothole & other road repairs have started. Please visit / to see which roads are maintained by the township, county, &/or state. If you are aware of any issues with our roads or signs, please call the Road Department at 440-926-2354.
Our new fire truck arrived. After the necessary training has been conducted, it will be put into service.
The LUCAS CPR chest compression machine arrived. It is an incredible lifesaving device. It enables medical professionals to best save lives of sudden cardiac arrest and avoid neurological damage during an event by supplying a steady supply of oxygen to both the heart and the brain.
We are accepting applications for volunteer fire & EMS personnel.
Residential lock boxes & reflective mailbox numbers are available to township residents for properties located in the township.

April is national distracted driving awareness month. May is motorcycle safety awareness month. Let’s be safe out there.
Trash / Recycling
Rumpke was selected once again to handle trash & recycling services for township properties. Dumpster days will be held Friday May 10th from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. & Saturday May 11th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. However, there is no need to wait for dumpster days to dispose of bulk items. If you have bulk trash items that need to be picked up, please call Rumpke at 800-828-8171 so they can plan accordingly. Items that Rumpke can’t pick up may need to be taken to the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District’s Collection Center located at 540 South Abbe Road in Elyria. They are open Mondays from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., & Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. They can be reached at 440-329-5440 or www.loraincounty.us/solidwaste. In addition to roadside recycling, containers are located at the township property for paper & cardboard. The county tire trailer located next to our town hall is open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesdays & Saturdays. Tires also can be taken to the Collection Center.
Zoning / Zoning Commission / Board of Zoning Appeals
Grafton Township is a zoned community. Michael Strah became our Zoning Inspector effective 03-01-19. When planning to erect a building, deck, pool, fence, etc., please call Mike at 440-926-2804 or [email protected] to see if a permit is needed. We thank Tom Steigerwald for serving as Zoning Inspector for so many years & wish him the best as he begins a new chapter. We apologize for any challenges contacting the zoning inspector during the transition. The Zoning Commission meets on the third Tuesday of the month. If you are interested in becoming an alternate for the zoning commission, please contact Scott Beriswell at 440-926-3312. The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month when needed. If you are interested in becoming an alternate for the BZA, please call Fred Giese at 440-926-3246. Grafton Township friends: Please take a minute to sign up for Lorain County’s Emergency Notification System. Currently all land-lines are loaded, but you can register cell phones, work phones, or other numbers where you might want to receive a notification. You can choose the medium that should be used ( call, text, or SMS) and block any hours when you do not wish to be contacted. You can also choose to receive notifications that are sent to the entire county or pick certain areas only or both. (This may come in handy if you have relatives in other areas of the county).
